Inks are primarily made up of two components, the colorant and the carrier (sometimes referred to as the vehicle). The carrier is the method of transport of the colorant to the media. The carrier can be either water-based (aqueous) or solvent-based. The colorant is responsible for absorbing and reflecting specific light wavelengths or frequencies which determines the color we perceive. There are two kinds of colorants, dye and pigment, both have advantages and disadvantages that are explained more thoroughly in the sections below.
